It’s still warm here in Atlanta, but every now and then we get a hint of the crisp autumn weather that is to come. Most people think fall lawn care is all about cleaning up leaves, but there are some other important tasks to take care of as well—especially aerating and overseeding!
So, why are aeration and overseeding so important for your lawn in the fall? Keep reading to find out!
Fall Lawn Care: Aeration and Overseeding
The fall months of September and October are the ideal time to aerate and overseed your north Georgia yard for several reasons:
- The soil is warmer and looser, making aeration easier.
- Weeds are naturally dying due to temperature changes, making it easier for the overseeded grass to thrive. On the other hand, spring soil is full of weed seeds just waiting to germinate at the earliest opportunity. Weeds are extremely opportunistic and are often able to beat your grass seed in the spring battle for light, nutrients, and real estate.
- Cooler night temperatures are easier for young grass plants to survive. If you attempt to overseed your lawn in the spring, the new grass may not survive the heat, humidity-loving fungi, and/or lack of water.
Benefits of Aerating Your Lawn
Lawn aeration is an important part of lawn maintenance, giving roots much-needed air circulation and allowing water to reach the roots more easily. Core aeration also allows any weed prevention, fertilizer, or other lawn maintenance applications to go deeper for a more effective treatment, and can aid in the decomposition of the layer of dead grass material known as thatch. If all of that isn’t enough reason to schedule your core aeration, it also helps make overseeding more successful!
Keeping your landscaping on a regular lawn maintenance schedule is an investment in your home. Regular service doesn’t just keep your landscaping looking nice, but also creates a healthier landscaping environment or ecosystem. In the long run, it also means less work, because the healthier your lawn is, the less likely you are to need many interventions due to weeds, pests, or disease. That means more time simply enjoying your yard, whether you’re kicking around a soccer ball with your kids, dining on the patio, or just relaxing with your toes in the lush, cool grass.
